shiploverny > This photo shows Saga Cruises' MS SAGA RUBY berthed at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal on 29 May 2006. She was built in 1973 as Norwegian-America Line's VISTAFJORD. She was later sold to Norwegian American Cruises in 1980 and again to Cunard in 1983 but kept her original name until 1999 when Cunard renamed her CARONIA. In 2004 she left the Cunard fleet and following a major refit she entered service with Saga as SAGA RUBY in 2005.
shiploverny > SAGA RUBY with the Brooklyn Bridge in the background.
shiploverny > The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal offers a lovely view, with Governors Island in the foreground and behind that, Lower Manhattan.
shiploverny > The entrance to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal shed.
shiploverny > The entrance lobby of the terminal. The desk on the left - unattended - is for tourist information. Behind the glass barrier is the departure check-in area; a door off to the right of this photo (not shown) leads to the security checkpoint after which passengers proceed to the check-in area.
shiploverny > The spacious departure hall. Because SAGA RUBY is in-transit rather than on a turnaround, the hall is deserted. Note "Cunard" banners, despite the fact that she is no longer a Cunard ship. (The terminal is normally used by Cunard and their parent company Princess Cruises; SAGA RUBY is only here because there is no space in Manhattan today.)
shiploverny > Looking back from the departure area to the entrance. Even though one normally must go through security to get to this point, the glass barrier actually opens up to provide direct access to termianl staff.
shiploverny > After a brief wait to pick up our guide, we pass through security and then walk out onto the quayside to board the ship. When larger ships call here, passengers board using the overhead walkway seen in the upper left-hand corner, but SAGA RUBY's shell doors are positioned in such a way that she cannot make use of this facility.
shiploverny > As a result, we have to use the gangway seen here. Note the very pronounced curved sheer of SAGA RUBY's hull. She was one of the last large passengers ships designed this way.
