shiploverny > This photo shows TSS THE TOPAZ berthed at New York's Pier 92 on 6 July 2006, dressed overall. She was built in 1956 as EMPRESS OF BRITAIN, one of the last three ocean liners built for Canadian Pacific. In 1965 she went to Greek Line as QUEEN ANNA MARIA, then in 1975 to Carnival as CARNIVALE, in 1993 to short-lived Carnival subsidiary FiestaMarina Cruises as FIESTAMARINA, in 1994 to Epirotiki Cruises as OLYMPIC, and finally to her current owners, Topaz International Cruises (owned by Capt. Paris Katsoufis) as THE TOPAZ in 1997. From 1997 through 2003 she was chartered to Thomson Cruises, and since 2003 she has been chartered to the Peaceboat Organization of Japan ((http://www.peaceboat.org). In 2006 the 32,327 GT turbine steamer celebrates her 50th anniversary. She is now the last survivor of the Canadian Pacific fleet and the last remaining liner built for North Atlantic service to Canada. THE TOPAZ will sail for Peaceboat at least until 2008, but faces mandatory retirement in 2010 due to SOLAS regulations. Now, please join me and the members of the World Ship Society Port of New York Branch ((http://www.worldshipny.com) for a tour of this wonderful vessel!
shiploverny > At Pier 90 is another Japanese ship, the Mitsui OSK Passenger Line's stylishly modern NIPPON MARU. Along with ASUKA II, NIPPON MARU and THE TOPAZ left Japan on world cruises within days of each other.
shiploverny > Inside Pier 92, a sign in Japanese and English points toward the ship.
shiploverny > The Reception is the first thing one sees when one boards THE TOPAZ on Main Deck. Originally, the bulkhead behind the desk went across the entire foyer and divided the tourist-class from the first-class foyer. This is the old first-class side, looking forward to the old tourist-class foyer. The current decor dates from 1997 when the ship became THE TOPAZ (then chartered to Thomson Cruises) and is by A&M Katzourakis.
shiploverny > Now we're on the tourist-class side; looking aft, what was on the other side of the now-truncated bulkhead used to be first-class. The stairway in the background is the old first-class main stairway.
shiploverny > These doors, which lead to the gangway, were originally wood. They've since been re-covered in laminate, but the original brass fittings and etched glass remain.
shiploverny > A "You Are Here" sign indicates that we're now in the port-forward corner of the main entrance on Main Deck.
shiploverny > These lift controls look VERY old.
shiploverny > This is the top of one of the original tourist-class staircases, in the former tourist-class half of the main entrance. The decor has changed entirely except for the original railings, which have lost their wood trim but are otherwise intact.
